Cree and LED lighting are starting a revolution
February 8th, 2010
It’s with a big pouty face that I announce the #RaleighLED Ice Skating Tweetup is cancelled. And it’s all the weather’s fault. Seriously, have you checked the forecast for Tuesday night?
Weather.com says there’s a 100 percent chance of precipitation. It’s supposed to rain in Raleigh pretty much all day. I’ve never been ice skating in the rain when it’s 40 degrees, but I’m pretty sure it’s not that fun.
Sadly, we won’t be able to reschedule the ice skating Tweetup because the outdoor ice rink is closing for the season this weekend.
But we truly want to bring together Triangle tweeps, preferably under LED lights, so stay tuned. Hopefully we’ll be able to organize another Tweetup in the spring.
Thanks to everyone who registered. Leave us a comment suggesting where in the Triangle you think our next Tweetup should be. We’ll randomly select two commenters at 4 p.m. Tuesday to win a Coleman Xponent Collapsible Lantern.

Center Court Crabtree Valley Mall. Easily accessible from all parts of the Triangle, plenty of room, add a bit of music and we turn it into a dancing Tweet mob

Boo! I was looking forward to this. Can’t wait for the next Tweetup. If the weather is good Boylan Bridge would be a cool place for a Tweetup!
Such a bummer! Double beat by the weather. That is just soooo North Carolina, right?
I think the next CREE Tweetup should be in Durham. Durham has SO many great places to highlight and enjoy, and I think it’d be amazing for Durham to get shown off in such an awesome way. Any LED-enhanced awesome places in Durham you know of?
Cheers!
I would love to come out to Cree and see the manufacturing facility. How are LEDs made? who are the peeps behind the LEDs?
Also it’s a great central location.
Too bad on the weather, was looking forward to this but great job on the effort anyway!
Any roller rinks in the Triangle have LED lights, or perhaps we could go and roller rally! I LOVE roller skating and have some quads I would just LOVE to get some use on!
@Jimmy Interesting suggestion on the mall for a tweetup destination. I love the idea of a tweet mob in general though.
@AshleySue You know me, I’m all about supporting Durham, NC. Unfortunately, the city hasn’t embraced LED lighting yet, so I’m not sure where we would find a good LED lit spot to hang.
@Brian A tweetup at Cree would be incredible except that we don’t offer tours because we have to suit everyone up to go into our clean rooms and b/c of intellectual property. So that won’t quite work.
@Mike I love the idea of a Boylan Bridge tweetup, but no LED lights there either (although you can see the Shimmer Wall from there).
How about The I-440 pedestrian bridge which is a connector for the City of Raleigh’s Reedy Creek Greenway?
The I440 pedestrian bridge as part of the City of Raleigh’s Reedy Creek Greenway could be roller blading or walking across and some hot cocao (bring your own mugs to support being “green”!
Cary McDonald’s? I will normally drive an extra 20 miles to eat somewhere else, but really, their bionic fries, coffee, milkshakes are not too bad, and I have heard the Angus burger is ok.
Alternatively, would any local retrofit winners be up for hosting?
Lanterns are fun!
I think we should have a potluck lunch at Pullen Park sometime. Fun playground, plenty of space to hang out or to even use LED lighting.
How about the newly redesigned NC Art Museum? They have lots of great meeting places. Either that or the Capital Building – I mean, we live in the capital of NC and that’s pretty cool. I’d love to take a tour!
@Kim The pedestrian Bridge would be cool if we turned it into a cycling tweetup. I love to bike through the museum park.
@Julia Cary McDonald’s is an awesome suggestion! I’m going to seriously ponder that one. I wonder if they have free wi-fi.
@Charlie Thanks for the deep comment ;o)
@Emily Pullen Park would be fun too, especially if the weather holds up. I wonder if there are LED lights there or plans to put some there.
Congratulations, Emily & Jen Newmeyer, you were selected to win the lanterns through Random Line Picker!
I will e-mail you both to find out your mailing address!
Thanks for the comments, everyone. We have some awesome suggestions for our next Tweetup. Stay dry tonight!
It’s got to be within sight of the shimmer wall or some other existing Cree product (Cary’s McDonalds IS a great idea).
So, if alcohol is important, the closest spot to the shimmer wall is Deep South or maybe Poole’s Diner.
If alcohol *isn’t* important, why not organize a green event like litter pickup or flower planting … again, in sight of the shimmer wall.
Yep, Cary McD’s has wi-fi http://www.mcdonalds.com/usa/restaurantlocator.html?method=search&primaryCity=cary%2C%20nc&postalCode=&country=usa
