Cree and LED lighting are starting a revolution

March 19th, 2012

From early adopter to newbie, December and January Cree LED lighting contest winners can’t wait to install new lights

From the West Coast to the Midwest, our monthly LED lighting contest is bringing LED lighting to homes around the United States. In December, we awarded five Cree CR6 LED downlights to John Kelly, a Bend, OR resident who is already a big LED lighting fan.  And in January, we shipped five CR6 downlights to suburban Chicago, where Tina Loustropoulos is poised to become to an LED lighting fan.

John’s winning entry came from his home’s guest room, which was lit by dim, wasteful lighting. While the room looks bright in John’s photo submission, he noted on his entry “3 can lights, not very bright and very wasteful. OK for sleeping but not much else. Good thing that the flash on the camera works.”  Here’s his winning pic:

Meanwhile, Tina’s winning entry showed our judges an even darker side of home lighting. In her entry, you can see a single lamp illuminating her entire living room. We’d love to be there when she installs her new Cree LED downlights and flips the switch on for the first time.  Here’s her winning pic:

We’re glad Tina entered our January contest, which she found while searching for new lighting options for her dimly-lit living room. The CR6 LED downlight delivers the same warm light you would expect from an incandescent light, but consumes only 9.5 watts! And it’s designed to last 50,000 hours, which means Tina and John could leave their new lights on eight hours a day, seven days a week and not have to change them for more than 17 years!

Here’s what Tina wrote to me when I told her she won the January photo contest:

“I did quite a bit of research online for recess lighting and the one thing that kept coming up was Cree lighting. After reading all the positive feedback on Cree, I knew that is what I wanted in my depressing living room. I went on your website to get more information and I found the contest. I am so glad I entered. I have never used LED lighting before so I can’t wait.”

Meanwhile, our December winner first installed LED lighting in 2008! John was an LED lighting revolutionary back when many people didn’t even know lighting a room with LEDs was possible. John says he installed 27 Cree LR6 LED downlights when he built an addition on his home in 2008. Here’s why he said he decided to go LED back then:

“Before I installed the LR6’s I did a test with an LR6, and incandescent and a florescent in a row of 3 can lights and asked everyone for feedback.  Nobody liked the lighting of the fluorescent, and the LR6 and the incandescent received similar responses.  I have since added another 5 or so, but still need more.  It is getting more difficult to upgrade as I have yet to find acceptable candelabra bulbs, but I am sure they will show up one of these days.”

We love that John is thinking beyond the downlight and already looking for LED options for his candelabra bulbs.

Stay tuned: We’ll be announcing the February contest winner soon. And if you’d like a chance to win five Cree CR6 LED downlights, simply submit a photo of bad lighting in your home or at work. Someone is going to win the March giveaway, it may as well be you!
