Cree and LED lighting are starting a revolution

December Cree LED lighting contest winner wants to save energy and money both at home and at work

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Rusty Ponder is always looking for ways to save energy and money. As the Energy Management Coordinator for the third largest school district in Mississippi, Rusty was recently researching new lighting technology for work. In fact, it was his quest to find ways to save energy and money that led him to our website and our LED lighting giveaway.

Rusty is the December winner of our monthly bad lighting photo contest. He wins five Cree CR6 LED downlights for his home. In his entry, Rusty submitted this photo and wrote:

dec 2010 winner

“This house has very little foot candles in every room. Actually it is like living with candles and no electricity!”

Well anyone who talks in foot candles gets a shining star in the lighting geek book. And we couldn’t let Rusty feel like he was living in the dark. Turns out he has bigger plans for his new Cree LED lights. When I wrote Rusty to tell him he won, I asked him why he entered the contest. Here’s what he wrote:

“I thought if I can win these, I can show my bosses the LED technology and do some light meter readings and demos, so they can see firsthand how good they are. Then I can install them in my house and enjoy them for years to come.”

I think that makes Rusty a true LED Revolutionary. Because he’s going to spread the good word about high-quality LED lighting before enjoying them himself. And indeed, these lights could keep Rusty’s home lit for many years. They’re designed to last 50,000 hours, which means he can leave them on eight hours a day, seven days a week for 17 years. The lights are also dimmable, which means he can bring some mood lighting home. And since they only consume 10.5 watts, Rusty will be saving energy and money, which was his goal all along.

“I believe I will have a lot more evenly-spread light with better color and use a lot less energy, which will help me save money and help save the planet at the same time,” Rusty wrote.

This will be the first time Rusty has used an LED light. We’re pretty sure it won’t be his last.

If you want to try to win five Cree LED lights of your own, hurry up and enter our February LED lighting contest. Simply submit a photo of bad lighting in your home, office or business here. Next month, you could be joining Rusty in the LED Lighting Revolution.

November contest winner: Even cats can benefit from Cree LED lighting

Friday, January 7th, 2011

Do cats deserve good lighting? (Cat haters, don’t answer that). What about the veterinarians, who treat sick cats, should they be able to work under good lighting? We think so.

The November winner of the Cree LED lighting photo contest is Big Sid’s Cat Sanctuary in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The sanctuary is home to cats that are FeLV (Feline Leukemia) and/or FIV positive. These cats are fortunate to get to live out their days in a posh cat sanctuary with regular vet care.

But Scott Eaton, a volunteer at the sanctuary, thought the cats deserved more. They deserved to live in a well-lit, energy efficient home. So Scott, after searching Cree’s website for real-world LED lighting examples, decided to enter our monthly photo contest. He entered the following photo and explained “’Big Sids’ is an animal sanctuary I volunteer for and help with maintenance. Our lighting is a mish-mosh of (incandescent) and cheap CFL, but it’s what we can afford. We are in desperate need of an upgrade.”

November Winner Cats

This was the winning contest entry for November.

When I wrote Scott to tell him he won the November contest, he explained where the new CR6 LED downlights are going to go:

“While a cat shelter may seem like fun and games,” Scott wrote, “all the cats at Sid’s are FeLV (Feline Leukemia) and/or FIV positive. This creates a lot of related health issues for the cats and consequently requires greater medical attention and examination. We will most likely use the lights in areas where our Veterinarian and volunteer examiners can best utilize the higher quality of lighting.”

Our CR6 LED downlights consume only 10.5 watts, yet deliver enough light to replace a 65 watt incandescent light. These downlights are also dimmable, which means the cats can have some mood lighting in the evenings. And the CR6 LED downlight is also designed to last 50,000 hours, which means volunteers at Big Sid’s Cat Sanctuary could leave the lights on for eight hours a day, seven days a week and they could last more than 17 years.

Scott added: “We only wish we had more of them, but after we see how well the CR6s work we are hoping our grateful donors and sponsors will jump on board and help us get more.”

If you live or work under inferior lighting, hurry up and enter our monthly photo contest. All you have to do is submit a photo of the bad lighting in your life and briefly tell us why you need Cree LED lighting. We look forward to your entries!

September Cree LED lighting contest winner to prove naysayers wrong

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Michigan resident Carol Thompson wanted to try LED lighting – or so she thought. But then someone told her that “the color spectrum was altered and they didn’t light too well.” Curious Carol didn’t let speculation stand in her way. She set off to Google the prospects of LED lighting.

“I found the information quite contrary to what I had been told,” Carol told me in an email.

Her quest to find out the truth about LED lighting led her to our contest. She submitted a photo of the lonely recessed light in her home office. Carol is the September winner of our LED lighting giveaway. She wins five Cree CR6™ LED downlights.

Here's the photo Carol submitted in our September contest.

Here's the photo Carol submitted in our September contest.

Here’s what Carol is going to find out when she installs her new lights. They deliver beautiful light, providing the quality you would expect from an incandescent. And her new lights won’t slurp up a lot of energy. Each CR6 LED downlight only consumes 10.5 Watts, and can replace a 65 Watt incandescent light. (Yes, the time has come to say goodbye to those Halogen lights warming up the cans in your ceiling.)

Carol’s new lights provide warm light (2700K for those of you in-the-know) and they’re dimmable to 5 percent. Bonus: She’ll use even less energy when the lights are dimmed.

And, Carol’s new Cree LED lights are designed to last 50,000 hours, which means they could last more than 17 years if she leaves them on for eight hours a day, seven days a week. It’s a good thing too, because Carol says the office lights are on a lot because her husband works at home.

When she installs her new CR6 LED downlights, she should invite over the person who told her that LEDs don’t make good lighting. We’d love to be there when she flips the switch so we can see their surprised look and hear her offer a big “neener-neener-neener” under her breath.

Congratulations, Carol! If you want to prove any LED lighting skeptics in your life wrong with Cree LED lights, enter our November contest for your chance to win five Cree CR6 LED downlights. And if you just can’t wait, look up a distributor near you.

Idaho resident wins Cree LED lighting contest, will finally turn on his living room lights

Monday, August 30th, 2010

You know the lighting in your home isn’t working for you when you intentionally avoid turning the lights on. That’s what Jerry Saltzer has been doing in his home’s living room and office for some time. Instead, he relies on floor and table lamps to illuminate the areas. How come?

“The living room (and office) in our house is equipped with incandescent downlights in 16.5 foot ceilings,” Saltzer told me in an email. “The light they produce is fine, but replacing those light bulbs is such a big production that we are inclined to leave them off as much as possible and use floor and table lamps instead.”

Jerry is the winner of the Cree’s July LED lighting giveaway. He submitted this photo of his problematic lighting situation:

July Contest Winner

Jerry wins five Cree LR6™ LED Downlights, which he plans to install in his living room. The LR6 downlight consumes only 10.5 Watts and delivers the warm light of a 65 Watt incandescent light. And Jerry’s new LED lights are designed to last 50,000 hours, which means he won’t have to deal with the hassle of swapping out his living room lights for years to come.

“Installing LED lights with an expected lifetime of 50,000 hours means that we can turn them on every evening and yet probably won’t need to change them until 2050,” Jerry wrote.

There are only a two days left to enter the August Cree LED Lighting giveaway. Just upload a picture of bad lighting in your home or office to Cree LED Lighting Revolution and you could be featured here next month.

New York-based Design firm wins the June LED Lighting contest

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

The lobby of Stressdesign may look modern and chic, but look closer and you’ll see that the Syracuse, New York-based Design firm is actually employing some pretty ancient technology – incandescent lighting!

Stressdesign president Marc Stress wanted to improve the lighting in his office, so he snapped a photo and submitted it to our monthly photo contest. Today, we’re pleased to announce that he is the June winner and will receive five Cree LED lights to replace the halogens heating up his workspace.

Here’s his winning picture and what he wrote about the lighting:

“We have a mix of incandescent and CFL lamps in our office. The CFLs are inconsistent at best, and all the incandescent lamps (add) to heat and $$$ on utility.”

lobby photo

This was the winning photo for the month of June.

I e-mailed Marc to tell him the good news. He opted to receive the Cree LRP-38 ™ light which will replace the 75W Halogens that hang from tracks over the office.

Some facts about the Cree LRP-38 lights that Marc is receiving:

  • The LRP-38 consumes only 11 Watts, while producing light comparable to a 75W incandescent.
  • It’s designed to last 50,000 hours. That means Stressdesign could leave the lights on for eight hours a day, seven days a week for just over 17 years.
  • But these lights won’t burn out instantly at the end of their life, like the incandescents Marc is currently burning.  Cree’s LED lights are designed to provide at least 70 percent of their initial light output at the 50,000 hour mark. Many different factors (such as fixture design and operating conditions like temperature and current) determine the actual lifetime of an LED fixture or bulb.
  • The light quality is beautiful. The LRP-38 light delivers warm light (2700K) and gorgeous color (achieving 90 out of 100 on the color rendering index).

Marc said he can’t wait to bring LED lighting to his Design firm.

“I’ve been using LED lighting solutions in various applications in my home and office for the past 5-7 years. I’ve used them for guide lighting, ambient lighting and supplemental area lighting. Early attempts were novel in their power savings, but light output and quality was lacking,” Marc wrote to me.

“Lately, I’ve noticed a huge jump in lumen output, CRI quality and lamping options. I am expecting the new Cree lamps to exceed expectations and provide a better alternative to CFL lamps,” he added.

If you want to give Cree LED lighting a try in your home or office, enter our July photo contest. To qualify for our giveaway, all you have to do is submit a photo of bad lighting to our site. We could be featuring you next month on our blog.

May LED lighting contest winner is racking up the energy savings with home renovations

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Minnesota resident Nicole Ronich is always on the lookout for LED lighting. Her father introduced her to LEDs years ago and lately she’s noticed that LED lighting is on the rise. She even recently learned that the Minnesota Twins’ Target Field features display boards lit with LEDs.

So when Ronich saw that Cree was giving away LED lights in a monthly photo contest, her thoughts drifted to her dimly-lit bathroom. She snapped this photo and later won the May LED Lighting giveaway.

May Photo Contest Winner

Nicole Ronich won the May LED lighting giveaway with this photo.

Here’s what she wrote about her bathroom lighting: “This is an old and hideous light fixture that is so inefficient. It also blows out light bulbs every other week. It gives my bathroom the shadow effect. I hate putting my make up on under it!”

I don’t blame her for not wanting to apply her makeup under this light. Hopefully her new energy-efficient LED lighting will improve lighting conditions in her home. Here’s what she wrote me when I e-mailed her to say she won the May photo contest:

“We have an older home and have been doing a ton of remodeling and updating of appliances to energy efficiency, improving insulation and replacing drafty doors, etc. It has been fun watching the utility bills drop! So, changing to a more efficient light bulb would be another step in the greener direction. My bathroom is going to be one of our last projects and to have better lighting would be awesome.”

If you’re jealous of Nicole’s new LED lighting, then enter our June LED Lighting giveaway for a chance to win some energy-efficient lights of your very own. Here’s how easy it is to enter:

Then, maybe I’ll be writing about your new lights soon! Congrats, Nicole!

April LED Lighting contest winner will light up his Hawaiian-themed coffee shop

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Charlie Trinh was surfing the Internet looking for “green products” when he found CreeLEDRevolution.com. The Houston, Texas resident says he saw our monthly photo contest and decided to give it a try.

“I needed brighter lights for my business,” Charlie said in an e-mail to me. He owns a coffee shop with a Hawaiian theme. “I want to convert over to LED lights but I would like to sample it out first before buying.”

Well, lucky for Charlie, he was the winner for our April LED lighting giveaway. He submitted this very dark photo of the counter at his coffee shop. This dark photo won Charlie five Cree LRP-38™ LED lights. His new 11 Watt LED lights are designed to last 50,000 hours, which means he could leave them on for eight hours a day, 365 days a year and they could last 17 years! And did I mention that would be an 85% percent energy savings if he replaced electricity-sucking incandescent?

“That was my coffee shop with all the lights on, and it was still dark,” Charlie wrote.

We’re excited to bring LED lights into Charlie’s life and business. Prior to winning these lights he said his only experience with LED lights was with his LED flashlight. (You may recall that was also the case for Fargo, ND homeowner Dave Hultin).

Plein air painter wins March LED lighting contest, plans to put lights in his studio

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

On Earth Day we’re celebrating our efforts to spread energy-efficient LED lighting. Here’s the story behind the March Cree LED lighting contest winner. You can celebrate Earth Day by submitting a photo for a chance to win five Cree LED lights in our April giveaway.

To say that Gary Bradley’s passion depends on good lighting would be an understatement. Gary is a plein air painter, who spends much of his creative time on location, painting landscapes and buildings on 8×10 canvases. When he’s finished with his small paintings, he takes them back to his Raleigh, NC, studio and paints a larger picture.

Once he’s back indoors, the lighting struggle begins:

“As a painter, one of the things that you have difficulties with is getting lighting in an interior studio,” Gary said. “You end up with all these shadows and the lighting is uneven, especially with fluorescents. So you have to put cool light in and warm light in.”

But Gary is about to win his battle against uneven lighting. Gary is the winner of Cree’s March LED lighting contest. He won five Cree LR6 recessed LED lights, which he plans to install in the studio he is building in his new home. Here’s his winning photo entry:

March Winner

Gary’s new Cree LED downlights will cast a warm, even light in his new studio. And, when I called Gary to chat about his prize, he pointed out another perk to the lights he won – they don’t contain toxic mercury like the fluorescents he was using.

“In the art world, we work with a lot of materials that are toxins, so you try to find different ways to be friendly to the environment,” Gary said, adding that he likes that LED lights are mercury free.

It was good chatting with Gary and learning about his passion for painting. He left me with this thoughtful quote.

“We live in a world where a lot of things are broken,” Gary said. “The environment is broken, personal relationships are broken, so people need beauty to heal themselves. Art is one of the ways we express beauty.”

Want me to write about you next month? Enter the April LED lighting giveaway for your chance to win five Cree LED lights. To enter the contest, simply submit a photo of bad lighting in your home, office, studio, or wherever you spend your poorly lit days. Happy Earth Day!

February LED lighting contest is a win for retail designer and his client

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

In a way, there were two winners in the February LED Lighting giveaway. We still only gave away five LED lights, but two people are quite happy about it.

Bob Curcio submitted a photo of a brightly-lit, fluorescent and incandescent filled urban footwear shop in Philadelphia into Cree’s monthly photo contest. He complained in his entry that the colors in the merchandise didn’t pop under the existing lighting. Take a look at his entry and feel his pain:

FebContestWinner

But it turns out, Bob isn’t even the owner of the store where these LED lights are going to go. He entered the contest on behalf of his client, who owns KICKSUSA. So when I wrote Bob to tell him he won, he contacted the shop owner to proudly say five new Cree LRP-38s are going to be installed in his store!

You see, it’s really a win-win for Bob. He is a store planner and designer, so he cares about things like beautiful lighting. I chatted with him on the phone this week and he told me the only LED light he owns is a flashlight. But he’s excited to learn more about LED lights for general illumination. He wants to test them to see how well they render colors and how much energy they save (I have a hunch he’s going to be quite impressed).

So the lights will be installed in the KICKSUSA  store in northeast Philadelphia sometime soon, Bob says. His client is thrilled to be the guinea pig. I can’t blame him, I’d be thrilled if someone won a contest on my behalf too. The lights he won consume only 12 Watts of energy, but provide the equivalent light of a 50 to 90 Watt halogen bulb. Bob said he’s pretty sure the lights he’s going to replace consume 75 Watts.

The March LED lighting photo contest is already underway. All you have to do to enter is submit a photo of bad lighting in your home, office or other workplace. You never know, I might be writing about you next month.
