Cree and LED lighting are starting a revolution

November LED lighting contest winner plans to transform family room

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

When Colleen Locchi began planning lighting for her kitchen, she thought she would go with CFLs. But the more investigating she did, the more she realized that mercury-containing CFLs likely weren’t the energy-efficient solution she wanted.

“Initially I was all about CFLs,” Colleen wrote me, “but the more research I did, the less enchanted I have become. LEDs seem to be the way to go. I did incorporate some into my new kitchen and find I now prefer them over my incandescent lamps.”

Once Colleen got a taste of LED lighting, she wanted more. So she entered (and won) our November LED lighting giveaway by submitting a picture of her large family room, which is lit almost entirely with lamps. Colleen won five Cree CR6 LED downlights, which she says she plans to use to accent her fire place and provide overhead task lighting without an assortment of lamps. Here’s the photo she submitted:

Collleen November 2011 winner

“We purchased the house in the mid-90s and the lighting in this room has been a thorn in my side ever since. The expense of the lighting always put it on the back burner so I am quite thrilled to be able to move forward with this project. I really think it will finish off the room,” Colleen wrote.

Not only will Colleen’s new Cree LED downlights deliver beautiful light quality (warm, 2700K color temperature), the lights will also save her energy. The CR6 LED downlight (pictured below) consumes only 10.5 watts, but delivers the same warm light you’d expect from a 65-watt halogen light.

And once Colleen installs her new recessed LED lighting, she won’t have to worry about changing them for years – possibly decades – to come. That’s because the CR6 LED downlight is designed to last 50,000 hours, which means Colleen could leave them lit eight hours a day, seven days a week and they could last more than 17 years. And, let’s be real, chances are Colleen’s family isn’t going to be using the lights that frequently, which means they’ll likely last even longer.

If you want to see how Cree LED lighting can solve your lighting challenges, submit a photo of the lighting you want to replace to our January contest. One lucky winner will receive five Cree CR6 LED downlights to transform their light-style.

Get Your Game Face on with Cree LEDs

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

It’s that time of year in North America – the leaves are beginning to fall, it is almost sweater weather and Saturday’s are all about college football. Given the theme of this month’s blog, it’s also the time of year when we think about energy efficiency. So, how does energy-efficiency, particularly LED lighting, relate to college football?  Allow us to elaborate.

Say you’re at home on your comfy couch watching your favorite team play a friendly game of pigskin on your high-definition TV. Or say you’re at the stadium, checking out live in-game action, stats and most importantly, the score. Well guess what – that vivid game day action may be powered by energy-efficient LEDs. From your LED-backlit HDTV to the high-res screen in the stadium, LEDs are a fan’s best friend.

Cree Energy Awareness Month

In fact, in stadiums around the U.S. and the world,  high-brightness LEDs, particularly Cree’s Screen Master® high-brightness LEDs, can be driven at a lower power to save energy and extend the lifetime of indoor and outdoor video screen and billboards. With industry-leading water-resistant packaging, Cree’s versatile 3-in-1 LEDs feature superior color quality and contrast, as well as the high-intensity output and wide viewing angles needed for optimal fan viewing.

If you’re a University of Michigan Wolverine fan, you might have noticed the newly upgraded scoreboards in “The Big House.” The largest stadium in the United States, The Big House consistently boasts game day crowds of more than 100,000 fans.

Well those new scoreboards are courtesy of Lighthouse Technologies and feature more than three million Cree Screen Master CLV6A LEDs in these state-of-the-art LED video displays and scoreboards. Positioned in each of the end zones, these massive high-resolution LED video boards are 40 percent larger than the previous system, providing in-game broadcast capability, instant replay, animation and dynamic promotional content in vivid color and ultra-sharp detail – all while saving energy.

And the University of Michigan isn’t the only one getting in on this high-bright action. The American Airlines Center, the Dallas home to both the NBA’s Mavericks and NHL’s Stars, installed 25 Lighthouse LED video screens as part of a large-scale renovation project in 2010. It even included the first 1080×1920 high-definition video screen in any NBA or NHL facility.

So whether you’re enjoying game day updates at home or at the stadium, don’t forget that the high-resolution action is being brought to you thanks to high-quality, high-performing Cree LEDs.

Energy Awareness Month 2011: Utility Companies Offer Rebates for Cree LED Lighting

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Cree is celebrating Energy Awareness Month with a series of blog posts about ways Cree and our products are helping save energy.

You can’t really blame utility companies for offering rebates that encourage customers to use mercury-filled fluorescent bulbs and tubes. That’s because back in the day, fluorescent lighting was pretty much the only option for energy-efficient lighting.

Thankfully, many of these same utility providers are staying hip to the now by expanding their rebates to LED lighting. This next generation of energy-efficient lighting products is winning support from utility providers that recognize LED lighting can offer improved light quality, longer life and better energy savings.

And many of those utility rebates are available for Cree LED lighting fixtures.

Rebates are now available for retrofit and new construction in utility territories across the United States. To see which utilities are offering rebates for indoor Cree LED lighting products, check out our rebates page.

Cree Energy Awareness Month

REBATE

Types of Utility Rebates

First a bit of Rebate 101. Utilities offer two types of rebates: Prescriptive and custom.

Prescriptive rebate programs provide a specific, predetermined dollar amount for each fixture replaced. These rebates offer extra savings potential since redesigns often reduce the number of fixtures needed.  Efficiency Vermont offers commercial customers prescriptive rebates of $30 to $40 off of Cree’s directional lamps, the LRP-38 and LRP-30, as well as $75 for the CR Troffer family. These incentives are Efficiency Vermont’s premium rebates and are only available to products that are qualified by either ENERGY STAR® or the DesignLights Consortium™. [Bonus – Cree’s fixtures are certified by both organizations!]

Custom rebates are based on the total energy savings for a specific project and are intended to provide rebates for approved fixtures not covered by a prescriptive program. The recently announced Cree CR Troffer Series is now part of custom programs from Maine to Florida. For example LIPA, NYSERDA and ConED (just to name a few), offer between $40 and $140 off per fixture when replacing T12 fluorescent tube lights, depending on watts saved and hours of operation.

Custom rebates can pay more than a prescriptive incentive especially in a 24/7 application when replacing incandescent fixtures. A ConED customer recently received $73 per fixture rebate under this program when replacing incandescent bulbs with Cree’s 4-inch downlight, the LR4.

Rebate Programs Develop Standards

Utilities in nearly every state offer some type of rebates on LED lighting, lowering the upfront cost of LED-based fixtures. These rebates are helping breakdown a key barrier for more widespread adoption of energy-efficient LED lighting in both commercial and residential settings. Additionally, rebates help promote quality fixtures, as each utility listed has developed stringent standards for the LED lighting products allowed in their respective programs.

We urge you to review the programs, listed by state, on the Cree rebate page. Check out your local utility and see what types of incentives they are offering to help businesses and homeowners make the switch to the most efficient type of lighting out there.

August Cree LED Lighting Winner rewarded for taking steps to go LED

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

When it comes to our monthly photo contest, our judges are usually on the lookout for submissions showing poor lighting that Cree LED lighting can easily help fix. But this month, the judges wanted to reward someone who has already taken steps to go LED.

Shaun McCance is trying to light his Cincinnati, Ohio, home entirely with LED lighting. He has already made a good dent, as his kitchen is half lit with LED lighting. Sadly, the other half is lit with CFLs. You can easily spot the difference in his photo submission for our August contest (or at least we could easily spot the difference):

kitchen

Shaun is the winner of our August photo contest and will receive five Cree CR6 LED downlights to help him reach his goal of going all LED. The CR6 downlight consumes just 10.5 watts but can replace up to a 65 watt incandescent without compromising light quality. That’s because it features warm incandescent-style light (2700K for you lighting know-it-alls) and is dimmable to 5 percent.

And, if the energy savings and beautiful light quality aren’t enough for you, prepare to drool over its lifetime. The CR6 LED downlight is designed to last 50,000 hours. That means Shaun could leave his new lights on eight hours a day, seven days a week and more than 17 years could pass before he might have to pull out a ladder to replace them.

I wrote Shaun to ask him what he was going to do with his new lights and he responded:

“I’ll put four of them in my kitchen, which will make all of the overhead lights in my kitchen LED. Right now, half of the lights in the kitchen are LED, and the others are CFL. When I come into my kitchen, half of it is poorly lit until the CFLs warm up. I’m looking forward to being able to use my pantry without waiting for light for two minutes.”

We’re looking forward to that for you too, Shaun! Another feature of our CR6 LED downlights is that they instantly come to full light with the flick of a switch. That means no more waiting for those slow fluorescents to warm up.

You have a chance to be a winner just like Shaun. Submit a photo of lighting in your home or office that you would like to replace with our CR6 LED downlight. Or, if you can’t wait, find a distributor near you.

Three million Cree high-bright LEDs light up Michigan Stadium scoreboards

Friday, September 9th, 2011

All eyes will be on the Big House Saturday night when University of Michigan plays its first ever night game in Michigan Stadium history. The newly-renovated, historic stadium is slated to hold a record-breaking crowd, with more than 114,000 fans expected to watch Michigan take on Notre Dame.

And we’re guessing that many of those eyes are going to be on the new LED video boards anchoring the end zones. Those stunning outdoor LED video systems by Lighthouse Technologies feature three million Cree high-bright LEDs to deliver an incredible fan experience!

Standing at 85-feet by 47-feet, the pair of Lighthouse IMPACT 16 video boards provide in-game broadcast capability, instant replay, remarkable animation, fan involvement sequences and colorful promotional videos. As for the video quality, we think Flickr user Corey Seeman said it best when he posted this picture and wrote this about Michigan Stadium, known as the Big House:

“Very cool to see the testing for the video screen at the Big House. Funny – the screen looks better from 200 yards than my TV looks like at home…”

And the Big House isn’t the only University of Michigan sports venue to sport Lighthouse video screens featuring Cree LEDs. Yost Ice Arena and Crisler Arena, home of Wolverine hockey and basketball, respectively, also boast new LED screens.

The LED Lighting Revolution isn’t just happening in your light sockets, it’s also happening at sports arenas around the world. At Cree, we love enabling our LED customers, and we’re pleased Lighthouse has helped transform the University of Michigan stadium experience.

Want to catch a glimpse of the new LED scoreboards at Michigan Stadium? Saturday’s game against Notre Dame will be broadcast on ABC at 8 p.m. EDT.

December 2010 Winner Rusty Ponder

When Rusty Ponder talked foot candles to us in his December 2010 entry, we knew we had a lighting geek on our hands. As the energy management coordinator for the third largest school district in Mississippi, Rusty us he wanted to do more than just make his home more efficient with his Cree CR6 LED downlights. He also wanted to expose his school district to the technology.

Once Rusty’s LED lights arrived, he decided to put three on his front porch and take the others to school. He chose to light his front porch with our long-lasting lights (the CR6 downlight is designed to last 50,000 hours) because “these lights get left on for many hours a day and I felt these LED lights would help cut back on my energy usage.” And Rusty doesn’t have to fear how the lights may perform in the Mississippi weather, because CR6 downlights are cULus Listed® which makes them suitable for wet locations.

“I really like how easy they were to install and the light output is the same, if not better, than the 65 watt reflector flood lights they replaced,” Rusty wrote in a follow-up email.

Rusty installed his Cree CR6 LED downlights on his front porch.

Rusty installed his Cree CR6 LED downlights on his front porch.

Rusty took his other two LED lights to school, where he is using a Kill-a-watt meter and light meter to show his boss how they can use energy-efficient lights in the school district to save energy. “Since I am the Energy Management Coordinator for our school district, I am always looking for more energy efficient ideas and these are top notch – I really like what I see. Thanks for this opportunity to try these out!”

No, thank you, Rusty, for using your prize to spread the word about LED lighting. That’s Revolutionary!

If you want to be an LED lighting revolutionary like Rusty, submit a photo of bad lighting in your home or office to our July photo contest. Each month our judges select one bad lighting situation to improve with Cree LED lighting. Submit your photo here.
