Located in Boone, N.C., Appalachian State University (ASU) recently retrofitted its freshman parking lot near State Farm Road with 50 LED fixtures by EvoLucia, a division of Sunovia Energy Technologies, Inc.

The 100-watt cobra-head street lights are powered by Cree XLamp XP-G LEDs and designed to last an average of 12 years, depending on use. The new LED lights replace the 250-watt high pressure sodium lights that used to illuminate the lot.

ASU officials anticipate the switch to LED fixtures will reduce the parking lot’s energy consumption by 60 percent and provide additional maintenance and labor savings in comparison to the original lighting.

“I’ve been a fan of LED technology for years and am pleased to bring high-quality lighting to our campus,” said Jerry Marshall, Energy Manager, ASU. “These LED fixtures produce a cleaner, whiter light than the yellow light of high pressure sodium and the even light distribution can help increase campus safety.”

Sunovia co-founder Craig Hall said he is pleased Appalachian State University selected the EvoLucia brand LED cobra head fixtures to illuminate their beautiful campus.

“The company’s LED Cobra Heads are recognized as the highest performing street lights in the burgeoning LED lighting industry, having won the US Department of Energy’s highest award in the category. Our proprietary Aimed Optics© technology utilizes numerous mounting angles within the fixture to maximize the lumen output of each LED.”

The freshman parking lot certainly looks fresh.
