The Revolutionaries
Nestled within the San Juan Mountain Range, the city of Ouray is known as the “Swizerland of America.” It’s a destination for those who love outdoor activities year-round, so maintaining the city’s pristine surroundings is a top priority. So when the city decided to replace its mercury vapor streetlights, it opted for LED streetlights.
The city installed LEDway streetlights by BetaLED, which are Dark Sky compliant and can save the city an estimated 50 percent on its energy usage.
“As a former astronomer, I understand how important it is to protect the night sky from light pollution,” said Ouray Mayor Bob Risch. Risch added: “Residents are very pleased with the minimal light trespass onto their properties and they like natural color of the light emitted from the new fixtures – it reminds them of moonlight.”
Facts about the installation:
- LEDway streetlights replaced all 400-Watt mercury vapor fixtures along Main Street and 175-Watt mercury vapor fixtures on all other streets.
- Light from LEDway units is controlled by patented NanoOptic product technology that directs light to where it’s intended, reducing light pollution and trespass.
- The extended life rating of LEDway streetlights calculates to less maintenance, which means fewer replacements, fewer truck runs, less fuel and less overhead for the city and utility company.
