Ice skaters at two ice rinks near Philadelphia are the first to skate under LED lights. Two ice rinks owned by Ice Line Quad Rinks had LED lights by Appalachian Lighting Systems, Inc. installed in July and October 2009.
The annual lighting bill for both rinks combined was $24,000 prior to the LED lighting installation. But with the new energy-efficient LED lights, the annual combined bills are expected to drop to less than $6,000.
“The lighting looks fantastic,” said Ice Line vice president Mike Graves. “We are pleased with the quality of service we received and with the improved lighting quality, and for the energy savings.”
Facts about the installation:
- Ice Line was using 400-Watt metal halide lighting fixtures, which consumed 458 Watts of energy each. The LED lights reduced that to 91 Watts per fixture, providing a substantially more efficient solution.
- The LED fixtures have a longer life expectancy and are brighter, whiter lights.
- The ice rinks will see a more than 75 percent reduction in energy costs.
